David Lawrence McGuckin of Bethlehem, PA., born on October 16, 1945 in Philadelphia, PA., to Catharine McGuckin (nee Crilly) and John James McGuckin, passed away at age 80 on November 8, 2025, in Bethlehem, PA. He was predeceased by his wife of more than 26 years, Mary Ann (nee Piotrowski).
He graduated from A. Lincoln High School in 1963 in Philadelphia and Drexel University in 1974 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He also held a Professional Engineer’s License with the State of Pennsylvania.
David served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1970 and was a construction surveyor in Viet Nam and Ft. Hood, Texas.
After working in Ohio and Florida on various construction projects he settled in the Lehigh Valley in 1982. He worked at PP&L in Allentown from 1982 to 1995. He then worked as an engineer for a pallet rack manufacturer in East Stroudsburg, a steel erection company from Reading, and then PennDOT as a grade crossing engineer. He enjoyed his retirement job as a valet at the local Lexus dealership.
Dave enjoyed flying for over 35 years and attained a commercial pilot license with an instructor rating. He took pleasure in flying friends down to the shore, up to the mountains and just generally also sharing the joy of flying.
His favorite hobby in retirement has been researching and developing the family tree dating back to 1677. He particularly enjoyed the chance to meet new relatives he didn’t know existed and to visit the locations in Europe and Ireland where the ancestors came from.
He is survived by his sister, Joanne McBride of Drexel Hill, PA and 4 nieces, Cathy Scanlan (Joseph), Beth McCaul (Dermot), Diane Ruberton (James) and Carolyn McBride. Also, great nieces and nephews, Eilish McCaul, Erin Scanlan, Fiona and Brendan McCaul, Kerri Scanlan, Richard and Andrew Ruberton and Riley Ruberton. Also, his granddaughters Shirley, Rebecca, Rachel, and Danielle Samson, and his son-in-law Reuben Samson. Predeceased by a daughter Karen.
